Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is one of Mexico’s most beloved traditions. Between October 31 and November 2, families welcome their departed, who, according to the belief, return for a few hours to be with the living.
Its roots are pre-Hispanic. The Mexica, among other peoples, held celebrations for the dead and for Mictecacíhuatl, lady of Mictlán, the land of the dead. After the Spanish arrived, these customs blended with the Catholic feasts of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.
It isn’t a day of sadness but of reunion. The ofrenda is the welcome: it gathers what the person enjoyed in life, and every item has a purpose. Water quenches the thirst of the journey, salt purifies, candles and marigolds mark the way, and copal cleanses the space.
Families also clean and decorate graves in the cemeteries, share food, music and memories, and write calaveritas literarias: humorous verses about death.
In 2008, UNESCO inscribed the indigenous festivity dedicated to the dead on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Customs vary from region to region and from family to family. There is no single right way to set up an ofrenda.
